When testosterone is mentioned there is always an assumption “doping”. The continual demonisation of testosterone ranging from spurious allegations of its side effects and to the stigmatisation of anybody on TRT, has led to an unfortunate underuse of this important hormone. However, it is now known from its long history of use that when used correctly TRT is safe and can in fact help to prevent many of the effects it is accused of causing.
Testosterone is a hormone that is produced naturally by the body, so when testosterone is administered into the body it is not an artificial molecule that the body does not recognise. We say that is bio-identical. Pharmaceutical grade testosterone has undergone extensive quality assurance programmes before being made available to the medical community. At Nebula Health we only source our testosterone from the major UK wholesalers such as Unichem and AAH, the same wholesalers that supply all the pharmacies in the UK. Hence you can be sure that the testosterone you receive from Nebula Health is 100% genuine and has undergone rigorous quality control tests.
Testosterone is perfectly safe when used correctly with the correct guidance. However, when excessive amounts or supraphysiological doses are taken, as seen in bodybuilders then adverse effects can arise. The key is balance; the term homeostasis describes an environment where everything is balanced in the body, this is what we are trying to achieve.
TRT can come in a variety of formulations and concentrations. Treatment regimens will vary from patient to patient, the choice of what formulation to use will take into consideration safety, efficacy, and of course personal preference. Some of the TRT formulations used are listed below:
- Oral preparations such as methyl-testosterone which is an alpha alkylated testosterone were initially used, however, the discovery of liver toxicity associated with its use has led to a dramatic drop in its use. At Nebula Health oral derivatives of methyltestosterone will not play any role in our treatment options.
- Intramuscular injections introduce testosterone into the muscle where it slowly is released slowly into the bloodstream. These injection formulations combine testosterone with an ester, basically a molecular chain that helps to prolong the effect of testosterone. Once the testosterone is enzymatically cleaved from its ester in the liver it becomes free to exert its action on the body where it can then act on the androgen receptor.
- Testosterone is also available in a cream formulation known in the UK as Testogel. The cream is specially formulated to allow uptake of testosterone after transdermal absorption.
The team at Nebula Health will guide you through the treatment options to make sure that a bespoke treatment package is delivered that allows you to optimise your testosterone levels.
A lot of the skepticism and misconceptions regarding testosterone arose because of seriously flawed studies. Two areas of particular concern are the risks associated with the development of prostate cancer and the increased risk of heart disease. As previously mentioned when used in safe doses by an experienced clinician TRT is perfectly safe as is now being demonstrated in newer studies. In fact, a lot of the older studies used testosterone in supraphysiological doses causing severe side effects. However further research on TRT within the normal physiological dosage range has now been carried out demonstrating both its effectiveness and safety so that now the general consensus in the medical community is that TRT is safe.
